Called to Help: Christian Counselor Gallatin, TN

Updated: Mar 15

Welcome to Next Step Counseling in Gallatin, TN. My name is Dave Crandall. I have been a counselor and life coach for more than 32 years. I bring a unique blend of compassion, wisdom, and practicality to each client interaction and join clients where they are to extend positive support, practical ideas, and encouragement. I believe in compassionate and straightforward honesty. This helps me to get to the heart of a matter quickly and chart a path toward lasting change with my clients. Before moving to Hendersonville, TN, in 2017, I served as a pastoral counselor in a suburb of Atlanta. I have been married to my college sweetheart Magda for 32 years. When I'm not counseling, speaking, or spending time with my family, I enjoy a wide variety of music, sketching, watching stand-up comedy, and laughing with friends.

What is Christian Counseling?

Christian Counseling incorporates spiritual principles into the counseling process. It begins with the belief that we are created in God's image and have been given the capacity for reason, love, and redemption. Christian Counseling recognizes that we are all broken by sin and in need of restoration. Christian counseling can also be called “Biblical Counseling” since it relies heavily upon the life-shaping truth and wisdom found in the Bible.

As a Christian Counselor, my primary purpose in life is to glorify God by using his wisdom and guidance when working with clients. This philosophy provides the foundation for developing a counselor-client relationship based on trust, respect, and mutuality. As a Christian Counselor, I view my clients as whole - body, mind, and spirit - who are created by God and capable of experiencing His redemptive love. I seek to help clients find freedom from the problems that burden them so they can live more fully in accordance with God's plan for their lives. My goal is to see clients grow in their knowledge and love of God to experience His peace and joy in all areas of their lives.

Values Incorporated into Christian Counseling

We are called to show compassion and empathy for those who are struggling and strive to create a safe and non-judgmental environment where clients can feel free to open up about their challenges. We always remember that each client is an individual created in God's image and deserving of respect and dignity.

Core Values that Guide our Practice

Human Dignity and Loving Compassion

As a unique and valuable creation of God, everyone is worthy of respect and dignity. All individuals are hand-crafted by a loving God, and are offered a rich and abundant life. As such, you can be confident that you will be treated with the utmost respect when you enter our doors. We strive to show love and compassion to all and seek to provide gracious help according to your needs.

Goal-oriented Encouragement

We believe that everyone has the potential to achieve their goals; however, moving toward a positive future goal can be difficult. We are here to encourage and motivate you to get unstuck. We help you develop a practical plan and provide encouragement and accountability along the way.

Empathetic Space

People often feel alone in their pain and struggle and feel isolated. At Next Step Counseling, we empathize with those struggles. You are not alone. We understand the pain, frustration, and hopelessness that accompany dark chapters of life. We commit to creating a safe space where you can open up and start exploring new ways of thinking and being.

We believe that everyone has the right to receive the counseling and support they need and that no one should have to face their struggles alone.

5 Characteristics to look for in a Good Christian Counselor

A good counselor, whether a Christian Counselor or not, should always strive to create a safe and open-minded space where you feel safe and understood. He/She should be:

1. A Good Listener: Finding someone who will take the time to really listen to what you have to say can make all the difference. You need to have a safe space to share your thoughts and feelings and know that you are being heard.

2. Respectful: You need a safe and open space. This requires a counselor who will respect you and your beliefs and be open-minded and understanding, even if they don't agree with everything you say.

3. Supportive: No one can go through life alone; that's why finding a strong support system is so important. You need a counselor who offers support and encouragement throughout your journey and will cheer you on as you work toward your goals.

4. Knowledgeable: A good Christian Counselor must have a thorough understanding of people, the problems we face and the practical ways that the Bible and Christian principles apply to individual situations.

5. Compassionate: Compassion is an essential element of counseling. At Next Step Counseling, we deeply care about you as a person and your vitality. We are sympathetic to individuals' struggles and motivated by their success to live a whole and happy life.
